We Love Sydney – Part 2

August 2nd, 2013

Part I – Sydney trip

Our day 2 fun continued with afternoon walk around the city centre. The first building we passed by was the Capitol Square. A kind lady has volunteered to snap our picture when noticing mommy was busy directing Xuan to pose for the camera. Thanks Maam!

A building named as “Kiss”

Tallest building in Sydney, the Sydney tower

For those who do not have height phobia, you might consider doing the skywalk. It’s quite affordable and might be thrilling, this kind of thrill is not suitable for a mommy & a timid five- yr old!

We strolled through hyde park where Xuan began another bird chasing adventure.

If you take a bus to this park, you may easily recognise the Archibald Fountain (built in 1932) at center of the park. Just alight and start your adventure

I guess this must be a fun park, as we spotted 2 couples of bride & groom taking picture here. We also caught sight of old man playing this gigantic chess!

Xuan said ” I got the horse!! Neighhhhh”

When she’s tired, she just squatted here.

Behind the hyde park, you might find St. Mary Cathedral. A beautiful catholic church which somehow reminded us on Maria & Jesus. Too bad, we went there on Sunday and it’s not open for public. If you plan to visit & take a look at the church interior, the church is only open Monday to Friday ( certain time in the morning). Mommy was a bit disappointed.

And another most disappointing part was camera’s battery went flat just after we reached this place!! Backup battery was at hotel! Mommy… mommy…

Day 3 – 22nd July
Trip to the wildlife & mountain

We woke up late this morning and missed our tour bus to Blue Mountain. The tour initially included visit to major nature attractions off Sydney : Blue Mountain, Caves, Wildlife Parks.

Since we missed the bus, we’ve no other options than to take public transport to visit those places. Certainly we didn’t wanna stay the rest of the day at hotel and grumbling right?

One good thing of staying at our current hotel was its strategic location. It’s walking distance to everywhere, Paddys Market, Chinatown, George St, even to the Central Station. Hub of all the rail networks connecting different states & cities. Can you imagine that this building is 100yr old, it’s opened in 1906. We wonder where we could find 100yr old building in Singapore.

Kolong jembatan

The complicated network

There’s a small heritage center in this station

Mommy, does Thomas Train stop here?

At the platform, which was unblocked & scared mommy off. You know we always take it for granted that all platforms are secured & children could run about in Singapore.

Inside the cart, it was fun as this was 2nd floor of the deck. Imagine a double decker train!!

Our first destination, featherdale wildlife park. We took train from central to blacktown station, changed to a bus which took us about 20mins to arrive. The park’s in the center of Sydney suburb, a good chance for us to have a look at Sydney suburb life and their nice houses mommy dreamt to live at.

We’ve got 20% off tickets from the voucher we picked at airport.

Featherdale is a park with free encounters concept, which means kangaroo will roam about anywhere in the park and interact with visitors.

Snapped a picture with baby kangaroo (thanks to a jie jie from malaysia who helped take this photo)

The park also kept sick animals from other zoo. The pelican behind was one of them.

Kangaroo refuge. Millions of kangaroo living in Australia wildlife were killed in lots of road accidents and they spent longer live in captivity (according to the zoo keeper’s speech)

We sometimes spotted turkey walking around and we’re very cautious not to be too near.

We arrived just in time for pelican’s feeding time. All the ang moh’s toddler took turn to feed this fish, but not Xuan. She dare not touch the fish!

Spotted this rare species of birds, are they owl? They’re very furry.

And here it comes…. TADAAA……. the cute koala

THey’re so cute even when sleeping

Koala has the smallest brain proportion compared to any mammals, maybe that’s why they sleep alot! They just don’t need to work their brains out! Haha..
Pei Xuan loves touching their soft skins but still didn’t muster enough courage to hug the koala.

Other animals in the park : Australia saltwater crocodile (appears to be sleeping all the time in this winter)

White casuaria (reminded us of “bai fa mo nv”)

Xi yang yang

The baby goat seemed hungry and assumed her skirt was grass!

Which wasn’t of course and the blurred animal just walked off

Don’t mistake this as bunny, it’s actually Wombat. They’re so cute

Posing with boomerang in a foul mood, not cheap hm… We’re quite hungry and there food in cafe was cold sandwich. Guarantee this girl won’t eat!

Our next destination is blue mountain, we reached there by taking train from blacktown to katoomba (2hr journey). There were lots of travel buses out of Katoomba station. Since we arrived quite late in the afternoon (3pm), we had limited destinations for sight seeing before rushing back to Sydney city. Decided to take the explorer bus and visit the famous three sisters. Tips for other traveller : catch early bus to blue mountain and stay here for at least one night, you’d have ample time to visit all the popular tourist destinations and trek along the mountain trails.

The bus journey was enjoyable with drivers explaining the history of blue mountain area and the attractions. We just knew that the area was formed as a result of corrosion millions of years back.

View from bus

If you’ve time, take the cable car or sky car at Scenic World stop. Again for those who doesn’t have height phobia.

Alternatively, just hang around the Mary’s lookout for a peek of the mountains

We finally reached our destination at Three Sisters, while we’re not really sure what to expect here, mommy decided to take the 20mins mountain walk and figured out what thing we would discover at the other end!

Nice scene at the end of the walk, we caught quite a near glimpse to one of the sisters!

The famous photo spot with Three Sisters behind us. The Aboriginal dream-time legend has it that three sisters, ‘Meehni’, ‘Wimlah’ and Gunnedoo’ lived in the Jamison Valley as members of the Katoomba tribe.

These beautiful young ladies had fallen in love with three brothers from the Nepean tribe, yet tribal law forbade them to marry.

The brothers were not happy to accept this law and so decided to use force to capture the three sisters causing a major tribal battle.

As the lives of the three sisters were seriously in danger, a witchdoctor from the Katoomba tribe took it upon himself to turn the three sisters into stone to protect them from any harm. While he had intended to reverse the spell when the battle was over, the witchdoctor himself was killed. As only he could reverse the spell to return the ladies to their former beauty, the sisters remain in their magnificent rock formation as a reminder of this battle for generations to come.

Photo was taken by a friendly auntie tourist from China, hm… on our third day, we started to realise majority of the tourists came from China.

Xuan took this snap

Xuan standing at the inter junction at Leura Village. Stopping by this place, to buy chips, candies & stuff our tummy before 3hr train journey back to Sydney.

We finally reached central station at 7pm, the night wind was so cold that we decided to take shelter in a Thai restaurant. Grab something hot for dinner.

Tom Yun Noodle

Kangaroo meat cooked with chilli & basil (yummy when taken hot!)

The day we left Sydney – 23rd July noon

@ airport departure hall

One more hug to kangaroo

Bon Voyage Australia, we’ll be back again to visit your other states, Melbourne, Perth, Aunt Wira & her baby!!

We Love Sydney – Part 1

August 2nd, 2013

It’s been years since Xuan long flight trip and this time mommy has decided to visit Sydney Why? Of course, because we love sydney!! A vibrant artistic city with the unique metropolitan life and the most exciting thing is : we can find kangaroos & koalas there!!

The journey started with 7hrs+ flight to Sydney… It’s on overnight flight and mommy had to make sure Xuan has enough sleep on the place for the next day’s journey.
Good thing was Xuan did sleep well with the help of wide & comfy seat at Qantas Premium Economy.

We stayed at Aspire Hotel, located just behind Paddy’s market in Chinatown area. Check out the little lady posing at a bench near hotel.

Paddy’s market closed on Monday -Tuesday, so for visitors going to Sydney please watch out of their closing days. We didn’t manage to visit this place, nvm…. we’ll add this place in our checklist for future.

First day – 20th July 2013
Sydney Chinatown
The chinatown is surprisingly small compared to Singapore’s chinatown area which boasts a large district of shophouses remained from the Pre World War II colonial.

Nevertheless, a visit to chinatown is a must for Asian tourist like us and we took a very quick stroll here. Look at the giant alaskan crab displayed in one of the chinese restaurant

After grabbing a quick bite at Harry’s Cafe – Haymarket, famous for their hotdogs and a good lunch chat with Mommy’s best friend, we continued our journey to Sydney city – centre of the business offices and shopping places, of course.

The city is full of art performer, busy professionals walking on the pedestrians, tourists roaming through the shopping buildings.

We’re rushing to catch view of historical clock performance at Queen Victoria Building.

We love QVB, a building constructed & completed in 1898, but still preserved at a very good condition. It felt so British, entering the building alone!

I bet if uncle Simon were here, he’d capture much more classic & professional pictures than Mommy!!

Xuan’s admiring Thomas train set (worth 5k?) from the shop ├ętalage

From QVB, we took the free shuttle bus 555 to Circular Quay, the port where Sydney Opera House is located.

Here, we had our group pic taken with our Sydney tour guide…. haha.. joking, picture on the left is Madam Wira Maya, mom’s best friend since high school!

We’re so impressed with the transportation system here, instead of the usual subways & bus (which we normally take in Singapore), people get to take the ferry in and out everyday. It reminded us to Hongkong , difference is : HK is naturally a country that’s made up of small islands, but Sydney is not. Another difference is, the sea gulls!! They’re plenty here at the ports. And Xuan was so obsessed with chasing all of the sea gulls. Remember girl, we had a discovery to make!

The Museum

The yummy GuyLian ice cream at the Rock. Thanks Aunt Maya for recommending

Potpouri! We love the scent.

Mejeng dulu dekat pos surat

Dinner at Darling Harbour

The seafood here was huge, fresh, yummy! Fish and chip is a must in your order.

Of course, colouring activity is another must for Xuan

Second day – 21st July 2013
Sydney Whale Watching

Whale watching, an interesting activity in Sydney, due to the fact that humpback whales migrate from April to December each years. Around 40k of the whale population passes by the sea off Sydney shores, making it a guaranteed discovery for visitors! Even the tour operator could guarantee visitors will be able to see the whale! It’s just a matter of choosing the right boat that could speed, spot and catch up with whale (fyi whale speed may be around 3-7knots)

In picture, Xuan ready for her whale spotting expedition.

Views from the ferry
Sydney Harbour Bridge

A strange looking ship, a battle ship?

The famous restaurant (add in must visit for next trip)

Street performer – riding bike on a rope?

Where is Xuan now?

Next, we’re going to the do some “fishy business”. That’s the sydney fish market, second largest in the world.

Look at all those yummy fresh seafood!! Which ones should we try?

And here’s our choice (easily predicted right?)

Xuan mejeng lagi

Another bird chasing activity again

Summer 2012

September 2nd, 2012

It’s the lovely August and Pei Xuan’s been having full lotsa fun during the whole month!

She visited the newly opened flower conservatories at Marina bay, Gardens by the Bay with mom, grandma, grandpa. It’s accessible from Bayfront MRT station or Bus service 518 (taken from Orchard Road) which stops in front of the Marina Convention Centre (MICE).

Pei Xuan, mom, grandma and grandpa visited the Cloud Forest Conservatory which comprises of a 35-metre tall mountain complete with the indoor waterfall covered in lush vegetation, the Cloud Forest portrays plant life from about 2,000-metres above sea level at the top of the mountain to around 1,000-metres at the bottom of the ravine.

Flowers displayed here at much lesser than the Flower Dome, yet the varieties of plants still presented a mystical feeling of walking in a forest.

Pei Xuan with her big smile

Spotted a giant snail!!

And few wooden crocs!!

This picture was taken by Pei Xuan with perfect focus..

She just squatted when she felt like it

Mommy visited the Flower Dome during the preview event on November 2011 and she managed to capture few beautiful flowers and orchids in this album.

Pei Xuan and the gang having lunch at Food Republic..

Another must visit place was the Resort World Sentosa to enjoy the Idul Fitri’s weekend holiday.

She’s eating the “happiness”

Played at VIVOCITY water playground

Of course, Xuan met & made new friend! A friend from 1 meter distance

To a zero distance, haha

There no such things as “stranger” in a kid’s dictionary.

On her childcare day off, she went to get a family makeover and photo shoot at The Makeover Inc.

It’s her first time getting a make up from the professional make-up artist. And it’s surely fun!

Though a little bit giggling!! Ha ha

But please don’t misunderstand her expression, it’s not hurtful at all!

Look Mom! I’ve got Minnie Mouse Ribbon

This is what she meant by “Family Photo”

The photo result from the makeover? COMING UP SOON in few weeks…

Pei Xuan’s equally busy at school (on top of all those outdoors activities). She’s graduated and performed for her term 3 Speech & Drama Class.

And performed for her English term 3 graduation.
Venue : Hess Education

The club med resort is located at Kata beach area in Phuket, a quieter beach compared to the famous Patong beach.

Lacheln loves this place so much as it has a big kid pool for her to swim.

She finally can float on her own…

A visit to Phuket Fantasea is a must, to experience Thai’s local culture and watch the intelligent elephants parading on stage. This is a park built on US$100 million and the cultural show has won accolades by many famous people (even ex Singapore President has visited there).

Pei Xuan with her peace sign :)
She’s actually enjoying her sun bathe now, minus the bikini of course!

Bali, Paradise On Earth

November 2nd, 2010

<< notes from 2-4th Nov 2010 >>

It’s a sunny and beautiful Tuesday and Lacheln’s waken up early in the morning. Mom has told her the night before that she’s going on a trip today.

At 10.30AM Xuan has started queueing at Terminal 1 departure gate. The queue’s long but smooth and Xuan was enjoying herself with grandma and dad. Look at the picture above J

At 2.30PM, Xuan has arrived safely at Ngurah Rai International Airport The whole family was met by Aunt Chin Lien and a really friendly local driver, which Xuan would keep on calling “Abang.. abang”.

As the airport is in central Bali, one can easily get to any tourist attraction spot as soon as they land in Ngurah Rai. Our first stop in Bali is Pura Uluwatu which is about 30mins away from airport. I think the most notorious monkeys in Bali must be residing here. So, for tourists with loose item (e.g spectacles, hair bands for ladies, etc), please beware. The monkeys lurk behind you and grab items within seconds, exchanging it with food. Only some lucky tourists will get back their valuables in good condition. Xuan’s lollipop was one of the item grabbed by a young monkey.

On the way back from Uluwatu, one should stop by Jimbaran Bay. It’s a desirable place to get local seafood and go for the ‘Everything’s Grilled’ mode like the one we tried at Beach Bali Cafe http://www.beachbalicafe.com/ You would like it !!

At 9pm, it’s time to finally checkin the resort hotel, Pan Pacific Nirwana. The hotel is neatly decorated and nicely situated at Tanah Lot. All rooms will have superb view of Indian Ocean and the famous Tanah Lot temple. Tanah Lot is one of the must visit place for first time visitor.

On the second day, we visited the famous “Babi Guling Ibu Oka” in Ubud. Do not judge the stall from the tiny size, as it’s won numerous international and local awards. The suckling pig’s marvellous with crispy skin (tagged with very reasonable price, it’s not affected by the tourists I guess). One can stop by the ubud traditional market to buy some local products. It’s a walking distance from the warung babi guling. Ubud is a remarkable town in the middle of the island of Bali. For more than a century, it has been the island’s preeminent centre for fine arts, dance and music. While it once was a haven for scruffy backpackers, cosmic seekers, artists and bohemians, Ubud is now a hot spot for literati, glitterati, art collectors and connoisseurs. For backpacker out there, ensure to stop by Ubud or stay one night at this location.

When dawn’s coming, Xuan’s admiring sunset at Kuta beach. Kuta was once the higlight in the news when terrorist bombed Kuta Legian night pub on 2002. A memorial monument has been erected nearby the spot and the pub has not been re-built since.

This is a diary written by mama….. She took us to Hong Kong for holiday… I went with grandpa, grandma, grandaunts…. It was a fabulous, windy, rainy, cold trip….. But I enjoyed it…

Hr pertama kami sampe (naik United airline), jam 10am waktu setempat cuaca msh 12derajat. Konon byk org hk suka tinggal disekitar sana, krn feng shuinya. Penjelasannya gini. He he.

Gua Tanya bell boy di hotel, mana yah mrt terdekat, dia jahat sekali lah, maksa2in kita naik taksi (taksi pribadi), ktnya hujan lah, naik mrt bo fang pian apalagi bawa bayi. Terpaksa kita nyerah naik taksi illegalnya, per kepala byr hkd 50 (sgd 10) gitu. Dibawa ke kota tuk cari makan. Tp yah, at least kita dpt ke satu tempat yg byk jual bubur dan makanan local hongkong. Auntie yg jaga toko juga baik banget, manggil2 xuan, tokonya kecil amat, lebarnya msh kalah ama lebar toko selatan indah lagi. Kita makan aja duduk sharing table ama uncle tua, uncle-nya juga baik, dia liat xuan main2 ama pepper bottle, dinasehatin jgn kasi main. Sebenarnya org local hongkong baik loh, tp malah yg kerja di service line, kayak petugas mrt, atau pegawai di hotel yg perangainya buruk amat. Gua msh kira service di Singapore gak bagus, di hongkong yg kerja service line, mkn parah lagi. Gua beli kartu mrt dan mau refund, dimarahin petugas. Gua dan mom gak bs geser kereta bayi masuk, mau minta bantuan, dimarahin petugas. Sampe kesalnya gua blg, so this is how your service is like. GOOD JOBBB!!!!!!

Msh ttg mslh service line, disini restaurant/toko2 makan sgt gak fleksibel.

(jd lapar)

Hari ketiga, hari bebas belanja.

Ampe lewat satu rumah makan vegetarian, buei I mereka girang amat, dpt nyari makanan vegetarian.

Dia Cuma mau diajak makan, trus gak mau main arena2 permainan disana. Tinggal gua dan mom dan xuan nyari2 tempat main. (untung hujannya gak seharian, gak ampe setengah jam lagi). Kasihan gua liat mereka antri ampe berdiri gemetaran. Kan gila TUHH, cuaca 6derjat, u pake celana pendek, tanpa jaket. Sdgkan kami aja pake baju berlapis2 tambah jas hujannnn…. pelit amat, jas hujan aja gak mau beli (hkd 45=sgd 9). Plg sakit kena H1n1 gmn? Ya kan? Gila….

Tahu gak cuaca sedingin ini, gua ditugasin beli dinner (bukan beli sih, kita diks voucher lunch and dinner, jd gua tinggal claim voucher aja) Soalnya auntie2 semua dah kedinginan, jam 5blk hotel, jam 6 suruh gua blk lagi ke dlm theme park (packing balik makanannya). Ampe acara fireworks jam 7.30pm jg gak berani liat lagi, soalnya di hotel lbh nyaman dan panas… he he…

Tp setidaknya di Disneyland ini, gua bs ketemu org yg kerja disana yg bs good service, bs ngomong English (kalo di hotel, u ngomong English, dia balas mandarin dan maksa2 u ngomong mandarin).

DSC01438
DSC01439
DSC01437
Hr terakhir yg paling gak seru, singgah ke shopping yg super mahal (mentang2 naik train dekat ke Disney). Gak ada brg yg bs dibeli… food court disana “food republic”, itu food court dr Singapore tuh… ck ck.. misi gua ke hongkong makan local food yg murah meriah gak gitu tercapai. Malah disini mkn Singapore food lagi? Ck ck….

My First Christmas

December 2nd, 2008

DSC01158

today is 25th dec 2008
it’s lacheln’s first christmas….. (she’s also sleeping with christmas song cajoling by neighbourhood street children)
this is also lacheln’s 6th month birthday
happy birthday my dear princess..

congratulations on all of your achievements.

allow mommy to name those achievements :

first, you can flip all over on grandma’s king size bed. do you know that your little 60cm plus size can conquer about two-third
of the bed and in the end grandma’s sleeping on the most corner side only?
(grinning…). lacheln flips like nobody’s business, wherever, whenever, she’s a little energizer bunny which is charged 24 x 7.

second, you can eat porridge now. Wow….. the first person who weaned you is aunt youni (yi ma).
and lacheln is a baby with big appetite…. mummy’s so proud of you darling. but still
mummy feels a bit hurt (not becoz i’m not the person who weaned you at that time), the
reason is mummy will start giving away breast-pumping for you. i could never imagine a day
without the usual 4 times breast-pumping (each took around 25minutes) and produced about min 180ml of milk for you.

third, you learn how to use “kipas”. my baby girl is so smart. mommy likes to fan you inside grandpa’s old car (yup
i know, there’s no aircon inside) and lacheln just know how to fan by watching mommy doing it.
now i know why studies have been saying that child’s mind is like a sponge. the learning ability is just so amazing.

fourth, you’ve taken your first airplane flight now baby… so lucky of you. mommy took her
first airplane when she’s 21yrs old. though it’s just 1hr flight, it proved to be no hassle for you darling.
other baby on the same plane cried throughout the journey, but u just seem to be enjoying the journey.
taking your nap, waking minutes before the landing. do you know that you’ve traveled miles from your home to grandma’s place?

fifth, grandma told me that you’ve been a good girl. taking green vegetable dutifully.
slurping fruit juices till the last drops. and hey, you like oranges (just like mommy, oh you’re mommy’s little precious).
fruits and vegs are good for you. just enjoy your food and be thankful to god for providing you the food.

sixth, you’re ready on the wheel baby. you jump and play on your baby’s chair, be grateful also
you have the chance to ride grandma’s new wheel (the new car bought especially to transport you everywhere)
you’re the only one who has that privileges in the family now (don’t miss the chance ok?)

seventh, you’ve visited your great grandma, grand aunt, cousin aunt & uncles.
and how you behaved like a small, sweet, adoring baby.
good job darling, now everyone can’t help falling in love with you.
isn’t that lovely?

eighth……. let’s add it in your next review later ok?

for meanwhile, just enjoy your stay with grandma.
you’re surrounded with abundance of love. thank god for that.
remember to behave yourself and poo-poo in the pot ok? (no more pampers wasting…)

mommy luvs you so muchhhhh

now i know why studies have been saying that child’s mind is like a sponge. the learning ability is just so amazing.

fourth, you’ve taken your first airplane flight now baby… so lucky of you. mommy took her
first airplane when she’s 21yrs old. though it’s just 1hr flight, it proved to be no hassle for you darling.
other baby on the same plane cried throughout the journey, but u just seem to be enjoying the journey.
taking your nap, waking minutes before the landing. do you know that you’ve traveled miles from your home to grandma’s place?

fifth, grandma told me that you’ve been a good girl. taking green vegetable dutifully.
slurping fruit juices till the last drops. and hey, you like oranges (just like mommy, oh you’re mommy’s little precious).
fruits and vegs are good for you. just enjoy your food and be thankful to god for providing you the food.

sixth, you’re ready on the wheel baby. you jump and play on your baby’s chair, be grateful also
you have the chance to ride grandma’s new wheel (the new car bought especially to transport you everywhere)
you’re the only one who has that privileges in the family now (don’t miss the chance ok?)

seventh, you’ve visited your great grandma, grand aunt, cousin aunt & uncles.
and how you behaved like a small, sweet, adoring baby.
good job darling, now everyone can’t help falling in love with you.
isn’t that lovely?

eighth……. let’s add it in your next review later ok?

for meanwhile, just enjoy your stay with grandma.
you’re surrounded with abundance of love. thank god for that.
remember to behave yourself and poo-poo in the pot ok? (no more pampers wasting…)

mommy luvs you so muchhhhh
